Despite having similar names, the compact 2022 Jeep Cherokee and midsize 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee differ widely in the features they offer. For this comparison, we chose to focus solely on the two-row version of the new Grand Cherokee, excluding the lineup's long-wheelbase, three-row L model and the last-generation Grand Cherokee WK.

2022 Jeep Cherokee vs. 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee: Price

The Cherokee lineup begins with the Altitude trim at $28,000. Next is the X trim for about $33,000, featuring standard all-wheel drive, a 271-hp V6, all-terrain tires, and a minor suspension lift. Above that is the Latitude Lux, the only Cherokee available with front-wheel drive. With that drivetrain, it carries the available option of an efficient 270-hp turbocharged four-cylinder.

Jeep charges around $40,000 for the base rear-drive Grand Cherokee Laredo, which makes use of a 293-hp V6. If you want the lineup's 357-hp V8, you'll need to pick a Trailhawk 4x4 or better. With full upgrades, the Trailhawk can total up to $70,000. Alternatively, for a similar price, you could get the base plug-in-hybrid 4xe model for around $56,000, which makes a combined 375 ponies from a turbocharged four-cylinder and electric motor.

2022 Jeep Cherokee vs. 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee: Features

Though the Cherokee and Grand Cherokee are both two-row SUVs, there is an obvious size difference between the two. The midsizer has 4 cubic-feet more passenger space and up to 12 cubes more cargo volume than its smaller sibling. It also has more tech goodies.

While both models feature an 8.4-inch screen in the center stack, you can upgrade to a 10.1-inch unit in the Grand Cherokee. On the Grand Cherokee's options list, you'll find a front passenger display that can mirror a phone or stream Amazon Fire TV, a 19-speaker premium audio system, four-zone automatic climate control, wireless charging, a night vision camera, and a head-up display. None of those options are available in the compact SUV. Plus, the Grand Cherokee can fit three car seats in the back, whereas the Cherokee can't.

2022 Jeep Cherokee vs. 2022 Jeep Grand Cherokee: Fuel economy

With the standard V6, the Cherokee delivers 23 mpg with front-wheel drive. Models with AWD perform a little worse, with the off-road-oriented Trailhawk seeing as low as 21 mpg, according to the EPA. Meanwhile, models equipped with the optional turbocharged four-cylinder return 26 mpg.

The V6-powered Grand Cherokee sees 22 mpg whether you have two or four drive wheels. The V8 will have to make frequent trips to the pump as that Grand Cherokee manages only 17 mpg. The plug-in 4xe does fairly well in fuel economy, providing 56 MPGe and 26 miles of range on a full charge. Once the battery runs out of juice, that model returns 23 mpg.
