The first Jaguar XJ arrived in the late 1960s, wearing an iconic design that would dictate the flagship sedan's styling, inside and out, until 2009. By then, however, Jaguar felt it needed something new to put the proud British marquee on a path to the future. As a result, the redesigned 2011 Jaguar XJ represented a significant departure from those that came before it. Over the years, the XJ offered a choice between V6 and V8 engines, some with supercharging, powering the rear wheels. An all-wheel-drive system was also available. Buyers could choose between luxurious and performance-tuned versions of the car, but they all had undeniable presence. This version of the XJ enjoyed a nearly decade-long run that ended following the 2019 model year. Jaguar expected to replace it with a new electric XJ, but management changes and a revised electric vehicle strategy canceled that plan.
