Oil leaks, oil leaks, oil leaks

09/21/2020

Read the history of this car. I absolutely love this car...when it's not in the shop. Of all the things that this car is notorious for having issues with (oil leaks costing over 6k in total; air suspension; overheating), I've had all of them. And they're not cheap. I like to run my cars into the ground, but I'm used to them only hitting those costly repairs closer to 200k. You'll have to trade maintenance costs and reliability for performance if you get this car. There's really no easier way to state it.

Awesome car, awful dependability

02/24/2020

Bought a silver X5 3.5i used in May 2019. Car was in beautiful condition and looked to be well maintained. Clean Carfax, one prior owner. Gave it regular oil changes, spent $4K repairing engine/differential leaks and replacing PCV which was causing oil loss. Figured this money was a worthwhile investment to keep the thing running for a long time. And it ran like new until the engine seized in the middle of nowhere in January 2020. There was no point in paying shop to tear down engine to find the cause. Shop guessed "a bad bearing." The cost to replace the engine, even a used one with over 100K miles, was at least $10K. Wasn't going to throw good money after bad so sold the car for scrap. Broke my heart, it looked nearly new, great fun to drive, handsome styling, not a squeak or rattle but it will go down in history as my $12,000 mistake.
